| Drawings of Barry Le Va's Cleaver Configurations |
[Jun. 11th, 2009|11:22 am] |
Hi hello again. I went to see Barry Le Va's Cleaver Configurations a while back up at Mary Boone Gallery and was quite struck by the pieces there. They're just huge meat cleavers embedded in the gallery's walls—not the kind of art I usually go in for—but they were somehow very visually arresting. (The lighting certainly helped.) So as I tend to do at galleries, I drew a few of the pieces:

Also, I found out last night that the Dime is not going to close for another month at least, which is good news for me but not so great for the guys that run the place...if you're in NYC and want some of the best coffee around, drop in!

| Homme du Monde |
[Jun. 10th, 2009|10:33 pm] |
Hi there
My good friend Paul got me to design and host a simple McSweeney's-looking music blog for him a while back. I said I'd plug him at some point, so here you go! It is called Homme du Monde and it lives at hommemonde.com. He's posted a bunch of his own music and lately he's been writing about other musicians. Here's the header image I drew:
And here's a thing he did with Mark Ludas of Rocket Surgery:
Enjoy! |

but my favorite café will be, soon!
The Mercury Dime (which you've seen before), is my favorite NYC coffee shop. And very soon, it will close forever. It's been the source of many an illuminating conversation and fierce game of Scrabble. The coffee is the best, bar none, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the staff are all 100% Solid dudes and ladies.
So, here are some farewell doots, drawn at the Dime: (ink, markers, coffee) (ink, markers) (ink, markers) If you're in/around Manhattan in the next couple of weeks, you should stop by!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS SCRABBLE NIGHT. FIERCE SCRABBLE. I'LL BE THERE.

| The Icicle Cave: a comix tour of my room |
[Mar. 5th, 2009|01:47 am] |
Long time no yak. I've been midterm-ing and working on sekrit comix. This here' s a little one-off tour of my room I did for a class. The heater in the apartment doesn't work any more, hence "The Icicle Cave". I've got a space heater though and spring ain't far off, so I'm doing okay.
This is my first time drawing on bristol board. Yikes, it's big! I'm scaling down for once.
Also guys have you read Dash Shaw's BODYWORLD? It's complete, and so so good. |

| Final FOOLISHCREATURES! Roundup |
[Feb. 16th, 2009|07:06 pm] |
I delayed posting this over the weekend cos I was deliberating about ending the comic...more about that after the comics & drawings:
So that's it for FC! as a regular webcomic. It went from being fun to a distracting obligation, since I have other, more interesting projects in the works (also, school). The quality was suffering, my mental state was suffering, and so that's that.
I AM gonna keep on using this journal regularly, posting art and comics, but the weekly comixparade posts are done. Stay tuned for art and news of sweet new projects!

Monday's comic, as you may recall, was my hourly comic for this year's Hourly Comics Day. That one was in my last post. Here's the rest of the week, goooo:
(That last one is on post-its.) Have a good weekend!

[Jan. 30th, 2009|08:18 am] |
Only 4 this week, thanks to a combo of overwork, frustration, and sick! Mostly frustration, though, that's what gets ya. Also, it's not so much comix as sketches:
This last one is xtra wide because I'd lose all the detail if I scaled it down as much as the others. On the FC! site, I had to crop in a bit, which I wasn't happy about. Also, apologies to reyyy for inadvertently deriving "Flubies" from Zubies and their design (maybe) from Seedless.

[Jan. 16th, 2009|07:34 pm] |
Hup this was a tough week for being on time, but the LJ roundup is earlier than usual! Here we go:
Some notes: I don't really like Red light because it looks like crap and it's hard to read and just not very good. I know "occurrence" is spelled wrong in A peculiar occurrence, but it's too late now, huh. Also that comic is related to this one from my previous webcomic. I'm pretty happy with the last one, though...I thought it'd make for a sweet "missed connection" on CL, so now it is one!
That's it for now, have a good weekend

[Jan. 2nd, 2009|04:22 am] |
Hello and happy new year, here are some comix + a drawing
"Hemingway Self-Portraits" is inspired by the six-word short story Hemingway famously called his best work: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." I've found that six-word shorts and character/scene sketches are good exercises for a stuck brain, so I made a comic based on a few I came up with.
"Shoki" was drawn from a print in the Hokusai Manga, which I will go ahead and recommend to everyone.
More Empty Girl to come...inspired in parts by Heartbreak Soup and mooncalfe lips. |

Hiiii
Happy holidaze. "A night at Ians" is (mostly) my first-ever guest comic, by my friend Markel. As for toroidal boggle and super spicy V8, I can't recommend them enough.

[Dec. 20th, 2008|01:48 pm] |
This week I think was a pretty good week. I got a brush pen! ALSO, FOLKS: I have a question? It's at the bottom of the post and I would appreciate yr inputs.
Okay, so: I like comics, as you may know by now, and I'm returning to college in January. I found out recently that if I'm annoying and persistent enough with the administration, I can probably fashion an independent study about comics! This is awesome, but I'm suddenly paralyzed by choice! I don't know what to focus on...so my question is, if you had an opportunity to design a course of study about comics in which you had a university's resources at your disposal, what would you focus on?

Friggin' comics! When will it ever end?
Some notes: the first comic, "Some Hourlies" are an excerpt from a series of hourly comics ( stereotypist came up with hourly comics, along with Hourly Comics Day) I did a while back as a gettin-the-comix-juice-flowin exercise. I was ruined after last weekend, so I just put that up in lieu of a new comic. The rest are fresh! And I've expanded to post-its (the green ones) and actual paper (the last one)!
I did actual for real hourly comics last Hourly Comics Day, which happened to fall on the day I flew from NY to Paris to Berlin, check it out!
Also, if you want to read an awesome and beautiful Conan comic (and I know you do), check out Conan the Cimmerian: Trophy on DHP, with art by the amazing incertus !

[Nov. 23rd, 2008|11:57 pm] |
This week was a bit different. Index card life drawings instead of comics:
In order: friends of mine, The Mercury Dime, my friend Travis, my and my friends' legs, high school. Sequentials were just not working for a while. But back to comics this week. |
